Dear Participants,
Welcome to the "XIII International Conference on Grapevine Breeding, Genetics and Management" (GBG2023) which will be held from 21 to 24 August 2023, under the aegis of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). This conference is a continuation of the ISHS series of International Conferences on Grapevine Breeding and Genetics, after the 12th conference in France in 2018, the 11th conference in China in 2014, the 10th conference in 2010 in the USA. The conference is held in the Cappadocia region, which is one of the most important tourist and viticulture destinations in Türkiye(Turkey).
Many leading Institutions of the sector, especially the Research Institutes operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Turkey and Bursa Uludağ University, support the Grapevine Breeding, Genetics and Management Conference.
Türkiye(Turkey) is situated in a favourable area for viticulture, and it has a long viticulture history in the cradle of great civilization. Viticulture has a long history in Türkiye, which has a vineyard area of 460,000 hectares, and it plays a key role among economic fruit species. Its production is approximately four million tonnes and half of this amount is table grape production. In addition, a significant amount of raisin grapes is produced. Limited amount of wine and grape juice cultivation is also done in Türkiye. The Cappadocia region, where the conference will be held, has an important place in Türkiye's viticulture. It is known that viticulture and wine production in the Cappadocia region dates back to the Early Bronze Age (3000 – 2000 BC). The unique volcanic soil and sloping terrain of the region cause the wines produced in the region to have a very special aroma. The Cappadocia region produces approximately 12% of all Turkish wine. Research studies on Grapevine Breeding and Genetics continue in Research Institutes affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Horticulture Departments of several Agriculture Faculties in Türkiye. As a result of these breeding programs, new grape cultivars are registering every year.
At the Grapevine Breeding, Genetics and Management Conference, it is planned to present studies on grapevine breeding, genetics and management. In addition to the studies on grapevine breeding and genetics, studies on the effects of global climate change on the viticulture sector will be among the priority topics of our conference. Studies on breeding, genetics and management carried out not only for wine grapes but also for table grapes are among the main themes of our conference.
"XIII International Conference on Grapevine Breeding, Genetics and Management" (GBG2023) will be a great scientific and social experience for everyone. We are waiting for you to join this conference and share your studies with participants.
We look forward to your visit to our country and Cappadocia region, which has a very high historical and touristic value and also has a very old viticulture.
